The Lenexa City Council on Tuesday gave RHW Management Inc. of Overland Park final approval to develop a Hyatt Place hotel and conference center in Lenexa City Center East Village, a mixed-use project at 87th Street and Interstate 435.

The $23 million project includes a 127-room Hyatt Place with an attached 14,000-square-foot conference center. Groundbreaking for the project is set for August 2014, with opening scheduled for summer 2015. It will add about 30 new jobs to the area.

To help secure the hotel project, the Lenexa City Council approved $11 million in tax increment financing. Of that amount, $5.4 million will be used to reimburse Lenexa for 5.5 acres of land it is providing for the project.

TIF allows new, or incremental, taxes generated by a project to be diverted for the reimbursement of eligible development expenses.

"We want this development to be a real trophy for the citizens of Lenexa, something that will make them proud," Richard Wiens, president of RHW Management, said in a release. "After 30 years of developing hotels, we are excited to have this one in our own backyard."

The Lenexa City Council on Tuesday also approved plans for a new upscale restaurant to be located next to the hotel and developed by DJE CCE LLC, a partnership affiliated with Dennis J. Eskie & Associates of Lenexa and Renaissance Infrastructure Consulting.

DJE CCE worked with the city of Lenexa to bring all parties together for the combined hotel, conference Center and restaurant package. Plans originally called for DJE CCE to partner in the development of the complete package. But recent negotiations led to the project being divided into two pieces, with DJE CCE developing the restaurant and RHW Management developing thehotel and conference center.
