Renner 89 Mixed-Use Project in Lenexa City Center

The first retail
project in Lenexa's City Center development is underway.
Renner 89, a
20,000-square-foot, two-story mixed-use building at 89th Street and Renner
Boulevard, will house retail and restaurant space on the ground floor and a
conference center and meeting rooms for Shawnee-based Perceptive Software LLC
on the second floor.
The structure is
being built by Omaha-based construction firm Darland Construction Co., which
opened an office in Lenexa last year. According to Reuben Perin, director of
business development for Darland's Lenexa office, construction of the
building's concrete foundation is already complete and vertical construction
will start soon.
Perin said the
building is slated for completion next spring, in conjunction with the new
240,000-square-foot Perceptive Software headquarters, which will anchor the new
commercial and residential development in Lenexa.
That job, which is
being carried out by Kansas City general contractor JE Dunn Construction, is
slated for completion in spring 2014 as well.
Darland, which has
been working in the Kansas City area for about a decade on mostly commercial
projects, was selected as the general contractor by Kansas City real estate and
development firm Copaken Brooks, the master developer for the City Center
project. Overland Park architecture firm Klover Architects Inc. is handling
design services for Renner 89 as well as the Perceptive headquarters.
Perin said Darland
beat out Kansas City general contracting firms JE Dunn and McCownGordon
Construction LLC for the work but isn't getting overly confident about its
place in the market.

The Lenexa City
Center development has gained momentum lately as the city of Lenexa has
committed to build a 200,000-square-foot community center and Kansas City
