Groundbreaking Ceremony Celebrates Kansas City’s 1818 Main Development, The Refinery
Kansas City, MO – On December 2, 2024, community leaders, city officials, and project partners gathered to celebrate the groundbreaking ceremony for the highly anticipated project to be named the Refinery, a transformative new development located in the heart of Kansas City along the streetcar line.
Led by Copaken Brooks, the Refinery is a 16-story mixed-use building will feature 147 residential units, including 54 studios, 87 one-bedroom, and 6 two-bedroom apartments. The development also includes approximately 1,000 square feet of ground-level commercial space, which will enhance the area’s retail and community offerings.
Designed by Generator Studio and constructed by Centric, the project gives new life into the site of a former abandoned structure, transforming it into a modern and vibrant centerpiece for downtown Kansas City. The development is financed through a partnership between Port KC and Enterprise Bank, exemplifying Kansas City’s commitment to fostering impactful public-private collaborations.
A notable aspect of the project is its dedication to affordable housing, with 10% of its residential units reserved for households earning up to 60% of the Area Median Income (AMI). This commitment highlights the development’s role in addressing Kansas City’s housing needs while promoting inclusivity within the urban core.
In addition to its residential offerings, the building will include a four-level parking garage with 113 spaces and unparalleled connectivity due to its prime location along the KC Streetcar line. This accessibility, combined with its urban vibrancy, positions the Refinery as a significant addition to the ongoing revitalization of downtown Kansas City.
Jon Copaken, Principal at Copaken Brooks, expressed gratitude and excitement for the development: “At Copaken Brooks, we are passionate about creating spaces that leave a lasting impact on our community. With the support of Generator, Centric, Port KC, and Enterprise Bank, the Refinery will be a symbol of progress, connectivity, and power of collaboration in Kansas City.”
The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by local officials, business leaders, and community members, marking the start of construction for the project, which is expected to open late 2026.
